The following information is from McKay's biography that appeared on the St. Mary's County website during his tenure as Commissioner President:
"A St. Mary’s County native, Mr. McKay was born in [[Leonardtown, Maryland]], and raised by his parents [[James Manning McKay|Manning "Manny" McKay]] and [[Marilyn McKay]] on the family farm in [[Hollywood, Maryland]] along with his three brothers and four sisters. He attended [[St. Mary's Ryken High School]] from 1970-1974 before earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration from the University of Maryland in 1979.
"Following his graduation from college, Mr. McKay joined the family grocery business on a full-time basis and was named General Manager of [[McKay’s Food and Drug Company]] in 1985 and Chief Operating Officer in 1999. In 1992 Mr. McKay became President of [[Woodburn’s Gourmet Market]]. In 1982 he was elected to the Board of Directors for the Mid Atlantic Food Dealers and elected Chairman in 1991. The Mid Atlantic Food Dealers serves more than 2,500 businesses throughout Maryland, Delaware, Northern Virginia, and the District of Columbia.
