The Board of Trustees is the governing body for the St. Mary's College of Maryland. The college is independent from the University of Maryland system.

By action of the Maryland State Legislature in 1964, St. Mary's College of Maryland was authorized to become a public, four-year college with its own Board of Trustees. Later in 1992, St. Mary's was designated an honors college. As part of the Maryland system of higher education, St. Mary's operates under the provisions of State Law, including the applicable policies and regulations of the Maryland Higher Education Commission and other State agencies. Within this framework, the authority to govern St. Mary's College of Maryland is vested in the Board of Trustees of the College.
